What AI Overviews and AI Mode read before they answer

AI Overviews and AI Mode answer with Gemini models that Google adapts to its search engine. This is not the Gemini app: it is magi, the Google Search system that writes these answers. Before writing, magi receives the search results with their ranking signals, results from about a hundred specialised providers (Shopping Graph, hotels, flights, reviews…) and Knowledge Graph facts turned into sentences. A graph fact keeps the URL of the page it came from only if it must be cited: otherwise it enters the answer without ever becoming a link to a site.

Gemini in Google Search is not the Gemini app

After NavBoost, KScorer and search intent, which followed a query to the classic results page, here is what happens when Google answers by itself, at the top of the SERP with an AI Overview or in the AI Mode tab. Both run on Gemini models, “a custom version of Gemini” in Google’s words: Gemini 3 by default for AI Overviews, Gemini 3.5 Flash for AI Mode, and Search routes some questions to other Gemini models; in AI Mode, paying subscribers can pick Gemini 3.8 Flash or Gemini 4 Argon. The name is confusing: the Gemini app uses the same family of models, but it searches the web through another pipeline, with other rules, and publishers control it in a different place.

Two tests, one explanation

A Knowledge Graph fact enters the answer as a search result, with no URL

In late October 2026, two SEOs showed the same thing in two products. Natzir Turrado got an AI Overview to state a fact about him that only the Knowledge Graph knows. Dan Petrovic asked AI Mode for the list of sources it received to answer a question about his age: one of them is a Knowledge Graph biography, with no URL. The two tests show what the model receives; Google’s internal schemas show why the URL is missing.

  • Natzir Turrado · natzir.com · October 27, 2026AI Overviews

    Natzir Turrado height

The AI Overview answers “5 feet 8 inches tall (about 173 cm)”, with no source. In one test run from the US, the citation marker stayed raw in the text: [1.31], query 1, result 31.

    What the Gemini app receives

    1.1.1PerQueryResult“Natzir Turrado is 5 ft 8 in tall.”url: none

Natzir had added his height to Freebase in 2014. No web page states it: it can only come from the Knowledge Graph. In the Gemini app, the fact arrives as a search result, at the top of the list, with no title and no URL.

“How Structured Data Reaches AI Overviews and AI Mode”

  • Dan Petrovic · dejan.ai · October 28, 2026AI Mode

    How old is Dan Petrovic?

AI Mode answers “47 years old”. Among the sources it received, the Wikipedia page of a footballer with the same name, with its URL, and right after it a biography taken from the Knowledge Graph, with no URL.

    What AI Mode receives

0.6.2Person Biography: Dan Petrovic“… Born: 1979. Place of birth: Vukovar. Nationality: Australia. … Relevant webpages: dejan.ai/dan-petrovic/ …”url: none

The age comes from the biography, but the only citation shown points to the footballer’s page. Businesses have theirs too: an “Organization Biography” with founding year, founders and headquarters.

“Google sends Knowledge Graph facts to AI Mode as uncited ‘Biography’ search results”

What the schemas explain

  1. A fact the Knowledge Graph took from a page keeps that page’s URL only if it must be cited (REQUIRES_CITATION). Otherwise TopicServer, the system that serves graph data to Google’s products, delivers the fact alone: the AI gets the information, not the URL.
  2. Every source of a fact states what AI may do with it, use by use: grounding a Search answer (AI Overviews, AI Mode), grounding an answer outside Search (Gemini app), training a model. The internal document the engineers point to is named after Bard, Gemini’s former name.
  3. The AI answer keeps track of those facts. Among the nine source types recorded with feedback on an AI Overview or on AI Mode, one is “generated from the Knowledge Graph” (GOOGLE_KG_GENERATED_SOURCE), next to the link to a page (LINKED_SOURCE).
Engineers’ commentFreebase & KG: if the triples were extracted from the web, the source URL where the assertion was found. (generally empty in freebase-sourced triples) TopicServer will serve/populate/retain if REQUIRES_CITATION is also set, or if the process is explicitly allowed.

The two articles

Natzir Turrado, “How Structured Data Reaches AI Overviews and AI Mode: What a Google Intern Leaked on His CV”, October 27, 2026. He starts from the CV of a Google Search intern, which we had spotted, describing a Query Result Service and a “textualization” service for structured data, and checks it against Google engineers’ profiles, the US antitrust trial documents, the public code of Google Earth Web (the WebAssembly file, or WASM, that the browser downloads when it opens the site) and his own tests. His conclusion: “Schema doesn’t directly influence AI Overviews or AI Mode answers.” Markup helped build the Knowledge Graph, which feeds the answers, but it is only a small part of the work of getting a fact in: “The most important thing is consistency across sources.”

Dan Petrovic, “Google sends Knowledge Graph facts to AI Mode as uncited ‘Biography’ search results”, October 28, 2026. He builds on Natzir’s work and shows that the biography AI Mode receives is richer and more current than anything the public Knowledge Graph APIs return. His warning to publishers: “A fact that only exists in the Knowledge Graph reaches AI answers without a link to you.”

138 result types from about a hundred providers feed the answer, and the web is only one of them

Fan-out queries do not only go to the web index. They go through QRS, the Query Result Service, which spreads them across specialised providers. The Google engineer quoted by Natzir Turrado describes leading QRS “on Search, AI Overviews, Discover”. The schemas count 138 result types under that name, delivered by close to a hundred providers.

Take this question asked to AI Mode:

  5. EntitiesKnowledge Graph facts on every landmarkEnrichEntityResult · GeneralEntityDataResult
  6. Web and forumsweb pages, the page opened, discussionsWebResultSnippet · BrowseResult · UgcDeepDiveResult

Every provider delivers its own result type, and all of them land in the same list as the web pages: the data attached to every result (ResultExtensions) holds a web result’s snippet and scores (WebResultSnippet, WebResultScores) just as it holds each provider’s output. A sentence taken from the Knowledge Graph therefore sits between two web pages. Natzir Turrado draws the rule from his tests on the Gemini app: “What matters is the position, because the sentence goes in the same list as the web pages.” When several queries go out at once, each brings back fewer results, and a sentence ranked low drops out.

magi keeps from every result the passage that answers, its freshness, its duplicates and its outlinks

magi is the internal name of the Google Search system that writes AI Overviews and AI Mode answers; it already served SGE, the 2023 Search Generative Experience. Results reach it ranked by Search: the generated answer (LlmResponseMetadata) receives the RankLab ranking signals of a result and those of the query, the same as a SERP block. Google puts it its own way: its generative AI features are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems”. On top of those signals, magi adds its own data on every result, seventeen pieces in all.

A page enters the answer through a passage, not as a whole

A page that ranks for the query does not enter the answer as it is. magi looks for the passage that answers the question asked, checks that the information is current and notes what it repeats from another source. Outlinks have a piece of data of their own, OutlinksData: it is the only name in the schemas devoted to the links a page makes to others, and it belongs to the AI. The AI Mode answer also has a corroboration signal (CorroborationRankingSignals), which ranks the sources that confirm what the answer states, and a tool that grounds every claim in the results (ClaimGroundingToolResult).

RankLab keeps 34 signals specific to AI search

Of RankLab’s 305 ranking signals, 34 concern AI: those of magi, AI Mode, the Mars servers, Web Guide and Ask Maps.

In an AI answer, a web page is one source type among nine

When a searcher gives a thumbs up or down under an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer, Google records every source shown with its type (MagiSourceType). The link to a page is only one of them. The other eight come from Google itself, from commerce and from contributions by users and merchants, which Google sums up in its overview of AI Mode: “facts from our Knowledge Graph, info about the real-world, and shopping data for over 50 billion products”.

  • LINKED_SOURCEa link to a web pagethe only link
  • GOOGLE_KG_GENERATED_SOURCEcontent produced from the Knowledge Graph
  • GOOGLE_GENERATED_SOURCEcontent generated by Google
  • GOOGLE_USER_REVIEW_SOURCEa review left on Google
  • SHOPPING_GRAPH_DATA_SOURCEShopping Graph data, Google’s product database
  • SHOPPING_LICENSED_SOURCElicensed shopping data
  • SHOPPING_GENERATED_SOURCEgenerated shopping data
  • UGC_STRUCTURED_QUESTIONS_SOURCEcontributors’ answers to standard questions
  • UGC_MERCHANT_JUSTIFICATION_SOURCEa merchant’s explanation

On a shopping, local or travel query, the site shares the answer with Google’s own data

The Shopping Graph, Google reviews and merchants’ explanations are sources in their own right, just like a page. For a merchant or a local business, the answer therefore draws as much on the Merchant Center feed and the Business Profile as on the site. For a person or a business, the Knowledge Graph plays the same part, and it links to no page.

Every fact states what AI may do with it, and publishers choose for their site

In the Knowledge Graph, every source of a fact carries its AI usage rules, a field of cumulative restrictions (data_access_restrictions). The six values draw clear lines between products: grounding in Search, that is AI Overviews and AI Mode, and grounding outside Search, that is the Gemini app and the Vertex AI API, are two separate rights, as are training Search models and training the others. A fact can therefore stay in a knowledge panel while being kept out of generated answers (LLM_RESTRICTION_SEARCH_NO_GENAI).

Open to every site since August 31, 2026; by default, the site is included. With the option “Exclude my site’s links and content from Search generative AI features”, the site’s content is no longer used to generate answers in Search’s AI features; it stays in classic search, and Google says it does not use the setting as a ranking signal outside these features. In return, the site gets no more traffic or impressions from those features.

  • nosnippet · max-snippetAI Overviews · AI Mode

Both tags also apply to the inputs of AI answers: nosnippet keeps a page from being a direct input, max-snippet limits how much is used. max-snippet does not restrict the page’s structured data or licensed content.

  • Google-ExtendedGemini app · training

The robots.txt token governs the training of Gemini models, including those behind Search’s AI features, and the grounding of answers in the Gemini app and Vertex AI. It does not remove a site from AI Overviews or AI Mode.

The same split, from site to fact. The Search Console setting removes a site from Search’s generated answers while keeping it in classic search; LLM_RESTRICTION_SEARCH_NO_GENAI does the same for a graph fact. Google-Extended follows facts too: a source that has blocked it carries LLM_RESTRICTION_GOOGLE_EXTENDED_OPT_OUT. The split comes from the law as much as from engineering. In June 2026, the UK competition authority (CMA) required Google to offer, by December 2026, controls over the training and grounding of its AI features and clear, accurate attribution with a clear way to reach the source, and barred it from circumventing a publisher’s choice “by acquiring that Search Content through other sources”.

Google measures whether the answer was enough, and sorts its errors into more than two hundred defect types

Once the AI Overview is shown, Glue, NavBoost’s interaction memory, counts what searchers do: answer expanded or collapsed, reformulation right after, clicks that expand the sources (corroboration_expansion_clicks), the “Show more” button. The NavBoost infographic covers those counters. When a searcher gives a thumbs up or down, Google logs the whole answer with it: the model that wrote it, the query interpretation chosen and every source cited. To pin down what goes wrong in a generated answer, Google has a grid of more than two hundred defect types (GenaiLp), sorted step by step, from the search to the cited link.

What Google logs with every thumbs up or down

  • model_namethe model that wrote the answer
  • query_interpretationthe query interpretation chosen

An answer whose age comes from a Knowledge Graph biography and whose only citation points to a namesake’s page is what the grid calls MISATTRIBUTION, information attributed to the wrong source, and INCORRECT_LINK_DESTINATION, a link that leads to the wrong place. Google also files as defects a relevant site ranked too low and a snippet that cuts the key information: from Google’s side, the grid describes what a page must bring to be a good source.

The Gemini app has its own search pipeline, and AI Mode is one of its sources

The Gemini app searches the web through the pipeline of the Google Assistant, which it took over from. It picks among fifteen search routes (WorldFactSource): full Google Search, through the same QRS as AI Mode, but also AI Mode itself, consulted as a source, and results already prepared for an AI Overview. Every result gets a status (WorldFactStatus): it is used for the answer, or discarded for one of 29 named reasons. This is the pipeline in which Google-Extended takes a result out of an answer.

For SEO: being cited plays out in the Knowledge Graph as much as on the page

AI Overviews and AI Mode start from Search results, but they also read the data Google holds itself. Seven consequences for a site.

  1. Check what the Knowledge Graph says about your entity, and fix it at the source

AI Mode receives a person’s or a business’s biography as the graph writes it, with the “Relevant webpages” line that lists the pages Google ties to the entity. A wrong founding year, an old site or a former job title reach the answer without any page showing them. Updating the entity’s Wikidata item, claiming the knowledge panel, publishing the facts on an official page and keeping them consistent from one site to the next is how they get corrected.

  2. Publish your facts on your own pages to win back the link

A fact known only to the Knowledge Graph enters the answer with no URL: it brings no click. The same fact stated on a page, in a passage that answers the question on its own, gives magi a web result that can become the cited link next to it.

  3. Count on structured data for the graph, not for the answer

The model receives text: snippets, tables, sentences taken from the graph. Structured data acts upstream, when Google ties the page to an entity and builds its facts. Google puts it its own way: no special schema.org markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

  4. Rank for the sub-questions, not only for the query

To be cited, a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible, on a site that stays included in the “Search generative AI” setting of Search Console; the answer then receives Search’s ranking signals. Fan-out multiplies the queries: a page that answers one of them precisely (the price, the season, the route) stands a chance even if it does not rank for the original question.

  5. Stay the original source, current, adding something else

magi records every result’s freshness, what it repeats from another source and its outlinks. A page that copies what others already say loses its spot to the original; a dated, updated page that links to its own sources keeps its place.

  6. Choose your settings knowing what they reach

The “Search generative AI” setting in Search Console removes the site from AI Overviews and AI Mode, and cuts off the traffic they send. Google-Extended only reaches model training, the Gemini app and Vertex AI. Before deciding, the generative AI performance reports in Search Console show the site’s impressions in these features.

  7. In shopping, local and travel, feed Google’s own data

The Shopping Graph, Google reviews, hotel rates and merchants’ explanations are answer sources in their own right, served by their own providers. The Merchant Center feed and the Business Profile weigh as much as the site’s pages.

An AI Mode answer mixes pages, which can become links, with facts Google holds itself, delivered with no URL. A site’s share of the answer is won on both sides: through pages that answer passage by passage, and through accurate facts where Google takes them from.
